SOS - SAVE OUR SEAS
Fundraiser for Mote Marine Laboratory in Response to the Gulf Oil Crisis
 |
As we all know, the oil spill can have a direct impact on our boating lifestyle and on our beautiful wildlife and environment. We are fortunate to have Mote Marine Laboratory just around the corner and the Mote scientists are already engaged in monitoring, testing and advisory activities as well as preparing for the nightmare eventuality of oil reaching our coastline.
Mote Marine Laboratoryobviously did not budget in advance for this unforeseeable event and so the club’s Charitable Foundation (SYCCF) is stepping in to host a fundraiser party on Saturday, June 5th in order to support Mote’s efforts to deal with the potential impact of oil arriving in Sarasota. Please sign-up to support this event, it will be a fun evening with music and dancing, dress code is “Florida-Tropical”.
Additional donations can also be made via the SYCCF website and you can immediately print out a receipt for tax purposes. This is where the money is going:
-
Monitoring impact from oil along the 33 Gulf Coast beaches. The Beach Conditions Report™ covers beaches from Collier County north to the Panhandle.
-
Marine Ecosystem Event Response and Assessment Project. With support from and coordination with the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary, MEERA provides early detection and assessment of biological events occurring in the Florida Keys and surrounding waters.
-
Conducting certain key baseline assessments and archive samples for future analysis. Without this information, the impacts of the oil spill cannot be measured. To help ensure that data on the effects of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill cannot be disputed for lack of baseline samples — as was the case in the Exxon Valdez spill.
-
Mote staff currently reviewing protocols for rehabilitating oiled wildlife, including guidelines from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Mote's ability to care for oiled wildlife and to measure the effects of the spill will depend on securing funding for the medicines, utilities and veterinary help necessary to respond to this disaster. To help Mote we need your help! Come and attend our tropical party on June 5.
